History

StMartinville

St. Martinville LA

Before, an area between the Gulf of Mexico and Atchafalaya River was occupied by the Indian tribes or Attakapan people. Europeans came when Louisiana was found in 1699. The land between the Bayou Nezpique and Atchafalaya River was occupied by Eastern Atakapa so they called it Attakapas Territory.

Settlers started to come in the area such as Gabrilt Fuselier d la Claire from Lyon, France in 1764. Fussier bought land in between Bayou Teche and Vermilion River, this is after the rival Indian Tribe came in the area and exterminated the eastern Atakapa. Europeans started to arrive in groups like one that led by Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil.

It was in April 25, 1766 that the Acadians first arrived and the population grew to 409 inhabitants. Napoleon sold Louisiana in 1803 through the Louisiana Purchase. St Martin Parish was established and then the Attakapas Territory was named St. Martinville.

For three decades, the founder has supplied Cajun food all over the nation. A company that just started with one product now supplies 250 products to restaurants and fast foods and provides jobs to over 100 employees.

St. Martinville is considered the birthplace of Cajun traditions and culture and the heart of the Cajun Country. In fact, St. Martinville is considered a multicultural community with French, Creoles, African Americans and Spaniards.

The area was famously called Petit Paris (Little Paris) back when the town was a cultural mecca with French theater, good hotels and Ducham Opera House that featured witty comedies and the best operas.
