Rayne, Louisiana – The Frog Capital of the World

Rayne is a prairie city in Acadia Parish, Louisiana, United States and part of the Crowley Micropolitan Statistical Area. It was named the “Louisiana City of Murals” and “Frog Capital of the World”.

Today, Rayne no longer exports frogs for they are now famous for having unique frog murals. It was Pat Brignac and Kay Cunningham who initiated the project on the Rayne Beautification Board. Then it was turned to a tradition with the help of Robert Dafford who was also an artist.

Weekly Gathering

A weekly gathering is held in Rayne called “Le table française” where residents enjoy the Cajun heritage and even speak French. It is held every Saturday at 10 a.m. where a table meets the Bernard Bertrand House and another to meet the Frog City Travel Pizza.

Famous Residents

This city has famous residents such as Harry Choates, Jo-El Sonnier, Lawrence Walker, Tony Thibodeaux, Joe Falcon and Johnnie Allan who are Cajun musicians. Also the basketball player Gerald Paddio, American football coach Ed Zaunbrecher, professional golfer Mike Heinen and Josh Reed, a NFL receiver of the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos are also residents of this town.

Fun Fact

Rayne houses the St. Joseph Cemetery which is listed under Ripley’s Believe It or Not! as the only one cemetery in the United States which is facing north-south.

This city has gone a long way from being the frog capital to a progressive city, but still they commemorate what made them become famous and that is through mesmerizing frog murals.
