New Iberia LA

New Iberia was founded in 1779 when 500 Malagueños colonists whom were led by Lt. Col. Francisco Bouligny came to BayourTeche and settled in Spanish Lake. They called the town “Nueva Iberia” to honor the Iberian Peninsula. The French called it “Nouvelle Ibérie” while Americans called it “New Town” after the Louisiana Purchase.

In 1814, a post office opened and the town was officially called “New Iberia” but postmarks revealed the town was called “Nova Iberia”. So in 1839, the state legislature solved the problem and officially used New Iberia as the name of the town.

During the American Civil War, Union forces under General Nathaniel P. Banks occupied the town and they spent the winter in that place. Men of Banks from New Iberia searched madly for food in swamps near the town in order to keep themselves warm for the cold nights.

In 1868, Iberia Parish was established and it became the seat of parish government. At the first they rented space until the new courthouse was built in 1884 in downtown New Iberia where Bouligny Plaza now stands. The courthouse served the people well until 1940. The present courthouse stands on Iberia Street which is two blocks from the New Iberia commercial district.

Infrastructures

New Iberia houses The Iberia Community Band which holds four concerts a year and is open for professionals, students and amateur bands regardless of the age and skill levels.
