Maurice LA

Maurice is a village in Vermilion Parish in the state of Louisiana, U.S. and part of the Abbeville Micropolitan Statistical Area. Originally called the Mauriceville, this village was named after the Maurice Villien. Maurice is a native of Savoy, France who came to America in 1855. He was a merchant in New Iberia, New Orleans and Milton. His wife, Marie Chati, held lands and even established a home and grocery store around the village.

In May 29, 1889, Villien donated 10-acre where the rectory and church were planned to be built. The town was established in December 2, 1911 and Maurice’s son, Joseph Villien, became the mayor for 17 years. To honor the family, a street was named after the first mayor, Joseph Street, which leads to the founder’s old home.

The first church established was La Chapelle a Maurice. A schoolhouse located in the Villien property was where the Sunday services were held until the St. Alphonsus Church was finished in January 1893. Father Alphonse LeQuillene was the first sector and then followed by Father E.J. Grimeaux in November 1893. Grimeaux was considered the hero of Cheniere Cominada disaster. A hurricane destroyed the church in September 1915 and was rebuilt in 1918. The present church was built in 1969.

Joseph Clark donated a land where the first school, Broussard Cove School, was built and it was moved to Maurice to the land donated by Villien. It was located at Maurice Avenue and Indian Bayou Road until it burned down in 1914. In 1926, a new school was built for elementary and high school students.

The first post office was located at the Villien Brothers’ store for 49 years when it was decided to be moved in E.G. Trahan building in 1951. Electricity came in 1929 and South Central Bell offered their private telephone service in 1946.
