History

It was in 1896 that the Holy Rosary Catholic Church was established in the developing European–American settlement. The population was mostly Acadian so French was the main language. The area was named after Abrom Kaplan who bought the Jim Jodd Plantation in 1901. The Kaplan progressed quickly and was named a town in 1902. The next year, people of Kaplan built the first school.

The Bastille Day was first held in town in July 14, 1906. This is the alternative name given by English speaking countries to French National Day. The Eleazar Theater was built in 1911 and 5 years later, the Kaplan Telephone Company started its services to the people.

Publication was also an industry in the town. Conrad Kaplan bought the Kaplan Journal newspaper in 1965 and named it the Kaplan Herald. When he died in 1992, the Louisiana State Newspaper bought the publication.

Kaplan is also named as the “Gateway to the Acadian’s Coastal Wetlands” because it offers hunting and fishing to many enthusiasts and is just minutes away from other neighboring cities.
