CC. Duson is the founder of Eunice which he named after his second wife Eunice Pharr Duson. It was him and his brother, W.W. Duson, who founded Crowley, Louisiana in 1887 but he wanted to expand the parish to the north so he bought a 16-acre land from Willie Humble of Prairie Faquetaïque. As a land developer, he created a town site for further development. He convinced Southern Pacific Railroad to extend its services from Cowley to his village. Then he started to promote land sales. It was named a village in September 12, 1894 and as a town in June 4, 1895.

Famous Buildings and Events

Eunice is almost at the heart of Cajun country which is why they are famous for Cajun music. It was in 1996 that the Louisiana Legislature had declared Eunice as the location for the Cajun Musical Hall of Fameand Museum. It was in November 29, 1997 that it opened to the public. It has the collection of different Cajun musical instruments as well as records and albums. It also has photographs and articles about the famous Cajun musicians.

It is just one block away from Liberty Theater were the “Laissez les bons temps rouler au rendezvous des cajuns”, a live Cajun music show, held each Saturday night. Eunice celebrates the famous Courir de Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday run). This is a traditional event hosted by many Cajun communities on Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

The site which is considered the birthplace of the town is where the Eunice Depot Museum is located. The house was converted to a museum in 1984 and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Place. No doubt, Eunice plays a big part in preserving the Cajun culture and tradition.
