History

The area was then ruled by the King of Spain and in 1790, he granted lands to three wealthy individuals. Eugene Carlin had the Jefferson area, Charles Prevoux had the northern part of the land and Jean Petit had what is now known as the Delcambre town and also the southern part of the area.

Although these land holders are French, the King insisted that Spaniards settle in the village. These lands remained untouched for a long time until the expelled Acadians from Nova Scotia arrived in town.

The Industry

Delcambre is a small and humble seaport but it offers the most abundant source of seafood for the community. Since the Bayou Carlin is connected to the Gulf of Mexico, you can find bountiful amount of shrimp which makes the town famous for its generous harvest of crustacean. To celebrate the rich harvest, the town celebrates the Shrimp Festival that attracts many tourists until today.

The Festival

Shrimp is what makes this community very famous in the state of Louisiana. Every third weekend of August, people gather to celebrate their bountiful harvest. You can see and have a taste of every shrimp dish they serve and watch who wins their shrimp cooking challenge. They also hold a beauty pageant to determine who will carry the Shrimp Queen title for the festival.

Aside from the fishing industry, Delcambre also has the gas and oil industry which makes this port a busy one. Agricultural industry is also famous in this small town. No doubt, Delcambre is one of the rising Louisiana towns in the Gulf Coast.
