Church Point LA

Church Point is a small town in Acadia Parish, Louisiana, and part of the Crowley Metropolitan Statistical Area. In the 18th century, French settlers created a clearing by burning the under bush on the bottom of the Bayou Mermentau. This clearing was named Plaquemine Brûlé in 1843 by Etienne d’Aigle III who was the first settler in the area. At that time, it was in the center of Opekusas Parish from the Atchafalaya River to Sabine River.

History

Plaquemine is an Atakap word for a Native edible fruit. Plaquemine Brûlé when translated to English means “Burnt Persimmon” which was abundant with persimmon trees.

As the population grew in the area, Jesuit missionaries built their chapel in 1848. The chapel was named as La Chapelle de la pinte Plaquemine Brûlé (The Church at the point of Burnt Persimmon) and stood on the land donated by d’Agile brothers Joseph and Etienne. The English name was then shortened to Church Point which refers to the tower of the church which can still be seen even from miles away. French referred to it as the La Pointe de l’Eglise.

The first school was built in 1856 and the first post office was established in September 29,1873, indicating that this community was growing and developing.

In 1981, the Acadia St. Lundy Medical Foundation started the Buggy Festival to be held in Church Point every first weekend of June. This is because the town used buggies as the mode of transportation until the 1950s. It is also why they earned the name “Buggy Capital of the World” in 1927. The festival has a parade and a  showcase of horse-drawn vehicles that visitors can explore. Cajun musicians perform along with the Cajun cuisine being served. Church Point is also known as the “Cajun Music Capital of the World” because they have a large number of Cajun musicians.

Church Point offers the ambiance of living in a small town which makes citizens more comfortable. With large cities such as Lafayette, Crowley and Opelousas 20 minutes away, you will never feel left behind by modern civilization.
