Cecilia LA

This divided community was named La Punta by Spanish which means a deep bend in Bayou Teche and called La Grande Pointe in French which was used by many people. It was in modern century that the area was named after the first postal clerk, Cecilia. The community served as a small center for landowners but as more people settled in the land along the north of Bayou Teche, the basic needs such as education, religion and trade grew.

Pierre Guidry was the first settler in Cecilia and bought three lands from Joseph Alexander Declouet in 1791. Guidry was married three times and had 20 children who stayed and had farms. There was a chapel built in Cecilia around 1874 and many believed it was named St. Etienne but it is still uncertain. It was in 1890 that a church parish was established in the area and Rev. Augustin Blanc was the first to serve that church. He remained the pastor for more than 38 years. St. Rose of Lima Church was built for the America-African assembly in 1944.

Origin of the Name

In Civil war, the area was widely known as La Place which was a bit confusing since there are many post authorities with the LaPlace in St. John the Baptist Parish.

The history of how the town Cecilia came up is uncertain but what the name Cecilia is widely accepted since it was named after Cecilia Lastrappes which was the first post mistress.

Famous People

Cecilia also has famous residents such as Robert Joseph “Bob” Angell who was a former State Representative and House Speaker, Paul J. Hardy which was the former Secretary of State of Louisiana and Lieutenant Governor, Jesse J. Guidry which was a former State Representative before becoming the Director of Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and Ramsey Dardar who was a former National Football League.
