Broussard LA

Broussard is a small city in Lafayette and St. Martin parishes in Louisiana. The original name of the city is Côte Gelée which means Frozen Hill because of its hilly area and the biting winter. However during the Civil War, Valsin Broussard, a local merchant who established the first Vigilante Committee and a descendant of Joseph Gaurhept Broussard De Beau Soleil ( one of the 200 Acadians who arrived in Louisiana in February 27, 1765) became one of the leaders of the Côte Gelée.

During his leadership, he donated land for the church and cemetery, private and public schools, railroad depot and the streets and alleys of the town. To honor what he did, the town was named Broussardville. In 1874, the first post office was built as Jean Batiste Malagarie became the first postmaster. In early years of the town, cotton was the major crop but it was Martial Francois Billeaud who introduced sugarcane to the town. In 1890, he owned 1300 acres of land and sugar mill. He also imported Holstein cattle which was the first in the area.

Also under Valsin, the Sacred Heat Parish was established in 1883; a church was constructed and Rev. Christopher Cuny was the first priest. After two years, the church burned down and Father Cuny left. It was only 1901 that a church was built again and Rev. Arthur Drossaerts became the pastor.

The first school in Broussard was a private one which Valsin Broussard established.  It now stands where the Dr. Robert M. McKay residence stands at the present time.

Industry

The main agricultural resources of the city are soybean, hay and sugar cane production. Also there is horse and cattle farming. Primary industries include oil and gas service companies, real estate developers, food distributors and manufacturing.

From a small town, Broussard has grown from a large sugarcane plantation to now an industrial community which offers over 300 businesses. It just became a city in November 2002. Amidst the developments of the city, it still holds the elegant atmosphere of Creole home cooking and Cajun food at local restaurants.

At present, the Broussard Historic Preservation Society has exerted efforts in order to preserve homes built in Acadian and Victorian era. They turned them into galleries, restaurants and even banks. They even put the Broussard home as an official entry for the National Register of Historic Places. This home is still occupied by the direct descendant of the man who built and nurtured the city.
