Abbeville is the parish seat of the Vermilion Parish in Louisiana, United States. It is the main city of the Abbeville Metropolitan Statistical Area and 240 kilometers west of North Orleans and 60 miles southwest of Baton Rouge.

Père Antoine Désiré Mégret

Abbeville was formerly named as La Chappelle.  On July 25, 1843, this area was bought by Père Antoine DésiréMégret, a Capuchin missionary, for only $900.  He then named the town after his house from France. At that time, there were only two people living in the area, Joseph LeBlanc and Isabelle Broussard, his wife. The former home of the couple was turned into a chapel by Father Megret but it burned down in 1854, and now St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church stands at the same site.

Father Megret made a map in 1846 in order to determine the surrounding towns of the area. With St. Victor Boulevard in the North, Lafayette Boulevard in the south, the Sisters of Charity in the east and Bayour Vermillion in the west, the town was only 38-40 acres in area. The town was called “Abbville” at that time. It was uncertain how it became Abbeville. There are two theories where the name originated. One is “Abbe” from the AbbéMégret and “ville” for town which means “Abbé’s town”. Another theory is that it is named after Abbeville of the Picardy Region of France, believed to be PèreMégret’s birthplace.

In 1995, Fr. Jean Desobry found in the archives of Amiens the diaries of Fr. Antoine DésiréMégret. It was found in his diary that he gave this Louisiana town the name of his birth place on February 12, 1844. Since then, he was named the founder of Abbeville in Louisiana. Also he stated in his diary, that people who lived in the area were descendants of Nova Scotia and Acadians that went to the area in 1766-1775.

In honor of the founder of the city, a statue was placed in the center of the Magdalen Square. The first chapel of Megret’s is now where St. Mary Magdalen Church stands which was built in 1910.

Abbeville is also the center of agriculture in the county including seafood and rice. The city also offers natural gas and oil services in the Gulf of Mexico. It is the main producer of cotton, corn and sugar cane.

This city was built by faith of a religious man which is why this city prioritizes faith, family and friends.
